#MGPReaders, From October 15th, the government will be executing a new method of collecting phone tax since many phone dealers have found a way to evade phone taxes.

The phone tax will be 30% of the value of the phone or tablet in use.

For every mobile phone or tablet connected to a telecommunications company in Cameroon, that’s any phone or tablet that has a sim card, the IMEI number of the phone or tablet will be identified.

Also, the owner of the phone or tablet, after connecting a sim card in the device, will receive an SMS telling the person how much they owe as phone tax.

The 30% worth of the phone will be calculated and included in the SMS, and they will have the option to pay the money in installments or at one go.

Phones of Foreigners/travellers in Cameroon are not subject to this rule.

Those who sell phones can go and declare the phones they have in their stock to customs, so that from October 15th, they will not be subject to the phone tax.

Those who sell phones also have the option of paying the phone tax in advance, so they sell phones to their customers that have already been ‘Phone taxed.’

So what does all these mean?

In essence, this is not really a new law, its just a change in strategy by the government because many phone dealers have found a way to avoid paying taxes.

In addition,  the government has come up with this method so that they will receive phone taxes by force, either from the phone dealer or from the phone users.

Now for the users, they will not have to pay any phone tax if their phone dealer already paid the necessary tax.

In a nutshell, the phone users/clients are encouraged to buy their phones from phone dealers who pay their taxes.
